Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Basics

Is Antique Iron part of Governor’s Architectural Salvage?

Yes. Antique Iron is the iron-and-metal-salvage storefront under the umbrella of Governor’s Architectural Salvage—created to make our huge iron inventory easier to shop online and in person.

What kind of inventory do you carry?

We focus on antique and reclaimed ironwork, plus select metal salvage (including items like steel windows) that fits architectural projects. Inventory changes frequently.

Who do you serve?

Our ideal buyers include contractors, designers, commercial projects, and homeowners—anyone who wants real materials (not replicas) and appreciates durability, character, and craft.

Shopping & Availability

Should I shop online or call first?

Shopping online is easy—and we encourage it. If you have questions, need additional photos, want to confirm measurements, or need to coordinate pickup or shipping (especially for larger items), please call or message us before purchasing.

Do you offer holds?

No—we do not place items on hold. Because most pieces are one-of-a-kind salvage, the best approach is to purchase when you’re ready.

Pickup (and why it’s often the best option)

Where are you located?

Pickup happens at Governor’s Architectural Salvage / Antique Iron:
8000 Antique Ln, Mechanicsville, VA 23116 (minutes outside Richmond)

What are your hours for pickup?

Tuesday–Saturday, 9–5.

Should I give you a heads up before pickup?

Yes, please. A couple of hours’ notice is great (more time is even better) so we can prep and help your pickup go smoothly.

What should I bring for pickup?

It depends on the item—iron varies wildly in size and weight. If you’re picking up, call ahead so we can help you plan the right vehicle and supplies (straps, blankets, trailer, extra hands, etc.).

Will someone help me load?

Customer loads. Staff may assist when available, but we can’t guarantee it every time—so come prepared. (Calling ahead helps us guide you on what you’ll need.)

Shipping & Freight

Do you ship?

Yes—within the continental United States.

Is shipping included?

For items we consider “easily shippable,” shipping is included in the price (and listings typically indicate this).

What about large/heavy items?

Many large items will be labeled LOCAL PICKUP ONLY or Pick-up Only, and some will note Shipping not included because freight logistics can vary. Even if it states pick up only, call us if you need shipping!

Do you offer freight shipping for big pieces?

Yes. If a listing says delivery requires a shipping/freight quote, contact us—we’ll coordinate freight and confirm details like residential vs. commercial delivery and whether you’ll need liftgate service.

Can you ship to a residential address?

Yes—we can ship to residential or commercial addresses. When we coordinate freight, we’ll ask the questions that affect cost and logistics (liftgate, access, appointment delivery, etc.).

Condition, Salvage Reality & Measurements

Are items new or restored?

This is salvage. Expect age-related wear, including patina, rust, old paint, dents, and variations.

Are pieces sold “as-is”?

Yes. All pieces are sold “as is / as you see them.”

Are measurements guaranteed?

Measurements are provided to help you plan, but with salvage, slight variations happen. If exact fit is critical, call/message before purchase and we’ll help you verify details.

Fabrication, Customization & Project Help

Do you offer fabrication or customization?

Yes—through Governor’s Architectural Salvage, we can provide fabrication/customization case by case(posts, latches, repairs, resizing, welding work, and more). Call us to discuss what’s possible: 804-746-1030.

Can you do sandblasting or powder coating?

These are common requests, and our team can advise on options as part of your project planning.

How long does custom work take?

Lead times vary and are quoted per job. Working with antique iron can be complex and isn’t always straightforward—so we’ll scope it carefully and set expectations upfront.

How is custom work billed?

Payment is due upfront for custom work.

Returns, Exchanges & Damage Claims

Do you accept returns?

We strongly encourage you to ask questions before buying—especially for long-distance shipping.

  • No refunds.

  • In some circumstances, we may allow an exchange (case by case).

  • If an item is shipped and you decide it doesn’t suit your project, all return shipping/transport costs are the buyer’s responsibility.

What if my freight shipment arrives damaged?

We can assist with freight claims. If you’re receiving a freight shipment, inspect promptly and document any visible damage so we can help you handle the claim efficiently.

Should I inspect my item at pickup?

Yes. We recommend inspecting items at pickup. Salvage is sold as-is, and once it leaves our lot, it’s much harder to resolve issues.

Trade & Commercial Buyers

Do you offer volume pricing for contractors or large fencing lots?

Possibly—call us to discuss your project scope and quantities.

What’s the best contact for trade/commercial inquiries?
